Murder at an Irish Christmas is the sixth novel in the Irish Village Mystery series and finds Siobhán O'Sullivan and the O’Sullivan Six visiting James’ soon-to-be in-laws for Christmas in West Cork. James’ fiancée, Elise, isn’t especially helpful when her grandfather turns up murdered, and even though it’s not in her jurisdiction, Siobhán gets involved in the investigation and doesn’t totally trust Elise because Elise isn’t honest in several instances. There are several other good suspects, however, and since Macdara, Siobhán’s fiancée, is spending time with his Mam and won’t be there to help her until the end of the trip, Siobhán is on her own.

The Irish cozy novels in this series are absolutely delightful; O’Connor captures the ambiance of Ireland, and readers almost feel they are actually there. The characters are well-developed, most are likeable (except the murderers, of course), and the O’Sullivan family is similar to our own families, i.e., one of the younger boys pees on a Christmas tree in the back of the symphony hall and gets in trouble by the owner – typical behavior of a little boy. The story flows and keeps the interest of readers. O’Connor is an excellent storyteller and after reading this novel, will be impatiently waiting for the next installment.

Since the first installment, I’ve wanted the recipe for Siobhán’s famous brown bread, since it’s mentioned in all the novels, and those of us who cook want to actually taste it; this installment is a breakthrough for me because it actually includes that recipe. Even though this novel is fun and a fast read, it’s worth it just to get the recipe.
